Ready For A Change
For a few months, Greg has had a full time job with benefits as a maintenance man at an apartment complex. He got the position a month after arriving at the Mission.
He has done millwork thoughout his life, beginning as a green chain puller when still a teenager. But a degenerative bone disease slowed him down and changed his life. For a few years, Greg had his own window cleaning business and did seasonal work through the winter. It proved to be too much for his medical condition. He worked odd jobs until the money ran out.
Yet, Greg maintains a “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” attitude. He just needed the Mission long enough to become self-sufficient again. He’s not waiting for a subsidized housing program.
Greg’s time here has been more than an adjustment of accepting physical limitations and reduced job prospects. He has been re-evaluating what is truly important in life. Greg was baptized at a local church while staying at the Mission. He said, “I asked a friend to tag along to church, because I was ready for a change in my life. I wanted to start praising the Lord. I learned that we have to change what we are doing, and do what He wants us to do. Chapel here is nice, that it’s daily, because it’s a reminder to take time to praise the Lord and pray.”
